What Is Ogham?

Ogham (pronounced “Oh-um”) is an ancient Irish writing system, commonly found carved on standing stones across Ireland, and in some parts of Britain. Thought to have originated at least in the 4th or 5th century CE (but possibly a few centuries before that, at least), it was primarily used to inscribe names and lineage on standing stones.

The script consists of feda (letters) formed by strokes or notches cut along a central line, often the edge of these Ogham stones.

While early scholars debated its origin, current research - such as that found in Stifter, Ogam: Languages | Writing | Epigraphy (2022) - suggests that Ogham was developed as a form of territorial marking and identity expression during the transition from oral tradition to written records.

Ogham as a Tool for Irish Identity

Ogham wasn’t just a way to write words - it was most likely a marker of belonging. Names carved on stones served as territorial markers, indicating who controlled or owned land.

These inscriptions often included formulas like MAQI (son of) and AVI (grandson of), recording lineage and ensuring that a family’s claim to land would be recognised by future generations.

Each letter’s design reflects its function as a phonetic system tailored to Primitive Irish, the earliest known form of the Irish language. For example:

• Beith (ᚁ): The first letter, often associated with birch trees, represented the /b/ sound.
• Fearn (ᚃ): Represented the /w/ or /f/ sound.

Understanding the system makes it easier to decode inscriptions and learn how ancient Irish people adapted written forms to suit their needs.
