Ogham Tattoos

Ogham tattoos - good idea/bad idea? Let's explore!

You might not know this about me, Dear Reader, but my first business was a tattoo and body piercing studio, in Roscommon town around 2002. I was a professional piercer, and hired tattoo artists for the studio, but between that and my own training in a tattoo studio in County Meath, I got a pretty good insight into the tattoo industry.

Ogham tattoos weren't very common back then (it was the era of the Kanji, to be honest, and I still shudder at the thought of all the Irish folk roaming around with gods know what tattooed on them). Today though, tattoo questions and requests for 'translation' and tattoo design flood my inbox and YouTube comments.

(Pro Tip: that's not what I'm here for - but I will try and help you through this article!)

Ogham tattoos can be a unique and meaningful way to express your cultural heritage or spiritual beliefs. For those of us who work with the Ogham on a magical or spiritual level, they can also be a way to permanently attract or repel certain energies or influences to our physical form.

As we know from previous blog posts, Ogham is an ancient Irish writing system that consists of a series of horizontal or vertical lines that represent different letters or sounds. Ogham was often used to inscribe messages on stone or wood, and it has a rich history and cultural significance.

If you're considering an Ogham tattoo, it's important to do your research and understand the meanings and symbolism of the different ogham letters, and how they might combine or be interpreted.

Each letter symbol has its own unique meaning, and many people choose Ogham tattoos as a way to honor their ancestors or connect with their Irish roots. It's important to know what you're putting on your skin, if you want to do that right.

Ogham tattoos are often small and discreet, and they can be placed on any part of the body. Some popular locations for these tattoos include the wrists, ankles, and fingers.

They can be included as a small or discrete part of a larger design, and Ogham tattoos can be done in a variety of styles, perhaps incorporating traditional Celtic knotwork, minimalist lines, or more detailed and intricate designs.

When choosing an Ogham tattoo, it's important to find a skilled tattoo artist - ideally one who is familiar with the Ogham feda (letters), and can create a tattoo that is accurate and well-done. It's also a good idea to spend some time thinking about the meaning and significance of your tattoo and what it represents to you.

Ogham tattoos are a beautiful and meaningful way to celebrate your cultural heritage or spiritual beliefs. Whether you choose a simple symbol or a more elaborate design, an Ogham tattoo can be a powerful way to express your identity, your spirituality, your magical intent... or to connect with your roots.
